This one is for all you lovely newly engaged ladies (and gentlemen, if you’re out there!)!   The most frequently asked question right after booking an engagement session all couples ask (either themselves or their photographer), is what do we wear???

My Top 5 Tips for Choosing Outfits for Your Engagement Session

Just like in marriage, aim to complement each other.

Try to stick with shades that are either complementary, or are in the same colour family, rather than choosing to wear the exact same colours. You don’t want to be too matchy-matchy, but you also don’t want to look completely different! Make sure the formality of your outfits matches, too. Ladies, if you want to wear a dress and heels, jeans and sandals may not be the best choice for your man 😉

Choose two outfits if you have a longer shoot

I know, I know. Sometimes finding one good pair of outfits that complement each other is hard enough! But changing your outfit means that I shoot you differently, you interact differently, and you just feel differently… and that comes across in your photos. It gives you variety in more ways than one, and that’s never a bad thing! Most couples opt for a nicer, more formal outfit, followed by a more casual outfit.

Be mindful of the colours in your environment, and when in doubt, choose neutrals!

This one is pretty straightforward, but worth saying: If you’re scheduling a autumn engagement session for when the leaves are lovely shades of red and orange and yellow, maybe don’t pick a bright pink dress. As a general rule, stick with neutrals as much as possible, with a few pops of colour here and there!

Bonus tip: If you’ve already picked out your wedding colours and you plan to use your engagement images in your save-the-date or as part of your wedding decor, see if you can choose outfits that look GREAT with those colours! You don’t have to pick those exact colours, but consider choosing a piece from your closet that is in the same colour family, or has one of your wedding colours as an “accent” colour!

If you don’t like how you look in it now, you won’t like how it looks on camera.

In order to look great, we need to feel great too, and if you are not feeling absolutely amazing in the outfit, chances are you won’t like how it looks on the images either.

Don’t go out and buy something new.

Yup, I mean this one.  Logistically, you don’t want to find out in the middle of your engagement session that your new shirt doesn’t fit quite right, or that your brand new shoes are super uncomfortable.

But on a more emotional level… You want your friends, your family and most importantly your new fiancé (say it with me, friends, doesn’t it just sound GREAT?!) to look at your images and to see you. To be reminded of a time you went on a date in that outfit. To think about how much that colour compliments your skin and your eyes. To think “wow, look how grown up my daughter looks” or “wow, I love how handsome my fiancé looks in that vest”.

An old standby that makes you feel like yourself is so much better than buying something new that represents how you want to look in your pictures. Being comfortable in front of a camera is all about accepting yourself. So wear an outfit that lets you do that.
